Nutrition Science Lessons for 1st-12th Grade

   Our Lessons   

Each course is four weeks long and consists of one hour of instruction per week. Throughout the school year, there are nine different courses offered. All classes involve lessons regarding scheduled topics and hands on activities for participants. Lesson plans and activities are tailor made to the student's grade level in order to keep them engaged and excited about what they are learning.

   Digestion & Absorption   

Students will learn how food is broken down mechanically and chemically through digestion and how nutrients are absorbed into the body.

   Macronutrients & Metabolism   

Students will learn what macronutrients are and the biochemistry of how they are utilized in our metabolism. Class topics will include carbohydrate, protein and fat.

   Minerals   

Students will learn how minerals are involved in the metabolic process and which foods contain each mineral.

   Water Soluble Vitamins   

Students will learn which vitamins are water soluble. They will also learn about where we find these vitamins in our diet and how they are utilized.

   Portions & Meal Planning   

We will practice meal planning and proper portions of food and drinks as it pertains to our everyday life.

   Cultural Foods: Mexico & Central America

We will explore the unique food culture of Mexico and Central America. Topics covered will include the differences between food consumption, family food practices and how individuals meet their nutritional needs through foods available in various countries within the region.

   Sports Nutrition   

Proper nutrition habits for an athlete are essential for optimum performance in every sport. Topics will cover proper fueling for a variety of sports and the science behind what happens when we exercise.
